Waahi Whaanui Trust was established in 1983 as part of a wider Waikato Tainui strategy led by the Tainui Maaori Trust Board. The Tainui Report released by the Trust Board, was a needs evaluation survey of the tribe within Waikato that highlighted the social and health status of the people.
The report was transformed into a strategic plan with the formulation of management committees based around a cluster of Marae communities creating specific areas of responsibility.
Waahi Whaanui became an incorporated charitable Trust on 27 February 1987. This enabled Waahi Whaanui to better fulfil our responsibilities of Kaitiakitanga, ensuring the protection of our natural resources and working with Central and Local Government to provide Health, Social, Education and Employment services for our whaanau and Hapū also extending to the wider community.
The Waahi Whaanui Trust has maintained its spiritual and cultural identity which remains the backbone of our organisation. This transcends into our philosophy of a holistic approach to service delivery, with the aim of establishing and maintaining fully integrated services. Waahi Whaanau is committed to a process of continued improvement and development to ensure that we are a highly accountable and professional organisation.

Partnerships and Collaborations
One of the key duties of Whaanui is to fulfil our responsibilities as kaitiaki o nga taonga tuku iho, to exercise full guardianship and custodial protection and care of all natural resources within the tribal boundaries of Whaanui.
The Trust has taken a lead role in working with major industries which impact our environment including Genesis, Solid Energy, Transit New Zealand, and Glen Coal.
The role of kaitiakitanga extends to working with government departments such as Environment Waikato, Waikato District Council and Waikato Conservation Board. Our aim is to minimise the environmental impact of development inNorth Waikato.
Over the years these partnerships have resulted in a number of restoration projects that have enhanced the quality of our waterways, ecosystems and fisheries.

Waahi Whaanui was established in 1983 as a component of a wider strategy led by the Tainui Maori Trust Board. The ‘Tainui Report’, released by the Trust Board, was the result of a needs evaluation survey of the tribe within Waikato. Not surprisingly, the report highlighted the social and ill health status of the people. The Tainui Report was translated into a strategic plan and incorporated the formation of a network of management committees, based around a cluster of Marae. The aim of the committees was to care for and assist whānau and Hapu to participate in their social and economic growth. In 1987, Waahi Whaanui became an Incorporated Charitable Trust to be able to fulfil its responsibilities of Kaitiakitanga, and working with government to provide health, social, educational and employment services directly to the people. In 1995 the Waikato – Tainui claim ‘Deed of Settlement’ was signed by Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu. The Waikato Raupatu Settlement Act 1995 was also established and by 1999 the Tainui Trust Board was dissolved and replaced with Te Kauhanganui o Waikato (Waikato-Tainui) and in 2016 the entity changed to “Te Whakakitenga o Waikato”
