About Waahi Whaanui
Whānau, Hapu and Iwi.
The Kaupapa of Waahi Whaanui – Whenua Ora, Wai Ora, Whaanau Ora, to serve the people under the auspices of Waikatotanga and Kiingitanga.
We aim to provide coordinated and integrated services that support the development of our Whanau, Hapu and Iwi.
About Us:
Waahi Whaanui was established in 1983 as a component of a wider strategy led by the Tainui Maori Trust Board. The ‘Tainui Report’, released by the Trust Board, was the result of a needs evaluation survey of the tribe within Waikato. Not surprisingly, the report highlighted the social and ill health status of the people. The Tainui Report was translated into a strategic plan and incorporated the formation of a network of management committees, based around a cluster of Marae. The aim of the committees was to care for and assist whaanau and Hapu to participate in their social and economic growth. In 1987, Waahi Whaanui became an Incorporated Charitable Trust to be able to fulfil its responsibilities of Kaitiakitanga, and working with government to provide health, social, educational and employment services directly to the people. In 1995 the Waikato – Tainui claim ‘Deed of Settlement’ was signed by Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu. The Waikato Raupatu Settlement Act 1995 was also established and by 1999 the Tainui Trust Board was dissolved and replaced with Te Kauhanganui o Waikato (Waikato-Tainui) and in 2016 the entity changed to “Te Whakakitenga o Waikato”

Marae Resilience - Toituu Marae
Whaanau centred, Community led, Government enabled. Build the waka before the flood - He waka eke noa.
He waka eke noa, we are all in this together.
During a severe weather event, it is likely that communities need to be self-sufficient for some time while an emergency response can be put into place.
To support this scenario marae resilience is about creating a framework for ongoing marae resilience, building capability, readiness and resources so marae can be better prepared to face future sever weather events. We are taking an approach that is whaanau-centred, community led, and government-enabled.
The goal is to take an intergenerational approach by building relationships and capacity between us all, to support the cultural significance, social cohesion, sustainable development and capacity of marae, whaanau and the wider community.
Waahi Whaanui Trust are working together with marae and council to identify the capacity of our surrounding marae and to bring marae and community together should a severe weather disaster occur in our rohe.
- The 4R's of Resilience are:
- Reduction
- Readiness
- Recovery
- Response
