From 2 Years to Six months community service.

Waahi Whaanui Trust had the opportunity to attend the sentencing hearing for a rangatahi who had been referred to the Whaanau Ora Service by his whaanau.

   During the hearing, the judge acknowledged that the rangatahi faced a potential two-year sentence due to multiple charges.

   However, the judge also recognised the value of the documentation and support provided through Waahi Whaanui Trust services and programmes, affirming the effectiveness of the interventions and support pathways offered.

   Before the judge delivered the sentence, he acknowledged WWT kaimahi for their advocacy on behalf of this rangatahi, highlighting how WWT's programs, such as Incredible Years, Te Puna Aio, and completing counselling, facilitated his significant positive changes during his engagements.

   The judge expressed admiration for WWT's significant intervention on behalf of this rangatahi.

   Consequently, this rangatahi’s sentence was reduced from two years' imprisonment to six months' community service and six months' probation. The judge also inquired about the organisation's location, recognising the crucial work being done to support young people in our community and emphasising the importance of our collective efforts.

This outcome highlights the importance of early intervention, consistent support and culturally grounded approaches when working alongside our rangatahi and whaanau.
