Learning your pepeha with Te Ataarangi method

    After receiving interest from staff, local marae and whaanau wanting to learn basic te reo Maaori, Te Aataarangi classes began on 9 February 2026. Running weekly from 6pm to 8pm, the class of 19 students is made up of kaimahi from Waahi Whaanui and local whaanau.

    Now at week 16, participants have begun learning their pepeha. Using the raakau method, each rod relates to a number of letters, with the different coloured raakau representing Maaori words that make up each person’s pepeha. The classes are fun, engaging, and provide a welcoming space for learners of all levels to begin their reo journey.

    A big mihi goes out to our kaiako, Kawe, who has generously given her own time to help kaimahi and whaanau learn te reo Māori. Each week during Monday karakia, staff continue to practise and review what they have learnt alongside their fellow kaimahi.

    One highlight so far was learning to spell and sound out the word Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu using the raakau — definitely a fun challenge for everyone involved!
