   In 1995 The Family Service Centre grew out of a government initiative to establish a 'one stop shop' pilot project in Auckland and several other similar centres including Huntly.

Whanui seized the initiative and took on the programme to enhance its existing services.

    Under the auspices of Delena Marsh, (Services Manager), and the late Judy Wharekura - Hona, Coordinator Social Services and ex Child Youth and Family Service (CYFS) worker, a new building, 'Te Whare Awhina' was unveiled in 1995. The building housed workers initially involved in Family Support (including Budgeting) and the HIPPY kaimahi. The Whanui Early Childhood Centre (WELC) operated separately in rooms located in Te Whare Awhina at Parry Street Huntly. Other contracts were secured e.g. PAFT and SWIS that increased staff capacity. Eventually government policy changed and funding ceased for the PAFT and more recently the HIPPY programme.
